At Kokoro Martial Arts, our training and philosophy are deeply inspired by Bushido, the code of the samurai. This ancient set of principles guided the lives of the samurai and remains a timeless framework for living a life of integrity, honor, and discipline. It is not religious nor a requisite by any means, but is simply a code of ethics and a philosophy that we choose to embrace. By understanding and embracing these values, we aim to help our students cultivate strength of character and lead lives of purpose both on and off the mat.
What is Bushido?
Bushido, meaning “The Way of the Warrior,” is a code of ethics and conduct that governed the samurai class of feudal Japan. It is not merely a set of rules but a philosophy that emphasizes moral behavior, personal responsibility, and unwavering dedication to a greater purpose. The values of Bushido resonate far beyond the battlefield, offering wisdom and guidance for navigating the challenges of everyday life.
The Seven Virtues of Bushido
- Gi (井) – Rectitude or Justice Upholding righteousness and fairness in all actions. Gi reminds us to make decisions guided by moral principles and to act with integrity, even in difficult circumstances.
- Yu (勇) – Courage Courage is not the absence of fear but the ability to face it with strength and determination. Yu encourages us to step forward in the face of adversity, standing firm in our convictions.
- Jin (仁) – Compassion True strength is demonstrated through kindness and care for others. Jin teaches us to seek ways to help and uplift those around us, fostering a sense of community and mutual respect.
- Rei (禮) – Respect Respect is the foundation of all relationships, whether with our peers, teachers, or adversaries. Rei reminds us to honor others through our words and actions, creating harmony and understanding.
- Makoto (誠) – Honesty and Sincerity Makoto calls for honesty in our thoughts, words, and deeds. A samurai’s word was their bond, and this virtue challenges us to live truthfully and honorably.
- Meiyo (名誉) – Honor Honor is the ultimate guiding principle of Bushido. Meiyo compels us to hold ourselves to the highest standards of conduct, striving for personal excellence and acting in a way that reflects well on ourselves and our community.
- Chū (忠) – Loyalty Loyalty is the commitment to our responsibilities and to those we serve. Whether it’s our family, dojo, or community, Chū inspires us to remain steadfast and dependable.
Bushido in Modern Martial Arts
At Kokoro Martial Arts, we integrate the principles of Bushido into every aspect of our training. Whether interacting with peers, instructors, students, whether in the Dojo or outside, practicing forms, sparring, or engaging in self-defense drills, our students are encouraged to embody these virtues and carry them into their daily lives. Bushido reminds us that martial arts is not just about physical skill but about developing character and making positive contributions to the world around us.
By embracing Bushido, we strive to create a community of warriors who lead with honor, act with courage, and inspire others to do the same. This is the true spirit of martial arts and the essence of Kokoro Martial Arts.
